Day trips

  • Wine route: If wine is your thing, the Empordà region on the Costa Brava has a lot to offer. The DO Empordà Wine Route immerses you in time-old, local traditions, dating back to Roman times.
  • Gastronomy: Catalan cuisine is in the ascendency. A deeply rooted culinary tradition, high quality ingredients and a perfect climate have tempted some the world’s best chefs to establish restaurants in the region. If you have the time (and budget), check out Ferran Adrià, Joan Roca and many others.
  • Golf: The Girona region has many top class golf courses available which are open all year round. Course vary widely from those situated by the sea, on the Empordà Plains, as well as those located in wooded mountainous areas. The nearest golf course is 10 minutes away.
  • Girona: Girona is north Catalonia’s largest city. An intricate tangle of ancient arcaded houses, grandiose churches, cobbled and steep streets and medieval baths, and Catalonia’s best-preserved and expansive Call (medieval Jewish quarter), all encircled by defensive city-walls and the meandering Río Onyar.
  • Figueres: Figueres is a straight forward enough town with an unmissable attraction: Salvador Dalí. Salvador Dalí was born here in 1904 and although he later lived in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and the USA, he remained loyal to his roots. In the 1960s and ‘70s he created here the now world famous Teatre-Museu Dalí – a monument to surrealism and a legacy that outshines any other Spanish artist. A must see.
  • Barcelona: Sun-soaked and lapped by the Mediterranean, Barcelona offers an intense experience packed with cultural treasures, from atmospheric medieval lanes to the glittering genius of Gaudí masterpieces. At dusk, there is a frenzy of buzzing restaurants and tapas bars.
  • Tarragonna: The perpetually sun drenched port city of Tarragona is an enthralling mix of relaxing beach life, Roman history and medieval cobbled streets. The town’s medieval heart is one of the most delightfully designed in Spain, its jumble of narrow cobbled streets is enclosed by sheer walls, atop of which sits an impressive cathedral, and its sandstone buildings beautifully reflect the abundant golden light.
  • Montserrat Monastery: The monastery is Catalonia’s most important religious retreat and groups of people make overnight hikes at least once in their lives to watch the sunrise from the heights of Montserrat. The monastery is also reachable by road and rail.
  • Poblet Monastery: This Cistercian abbey is one of the largest in Spain. At its centre is a 12th-century church. The austere, majestic monastery, which has a fortified royal residence and contains the pantheon of the kings of Catalonia and Aragon, is an impressive sight.
