The former ducal town of Wolgast is the oldest town in Pomerania, lies directly on the Peene River and is the gateway to the island of Usedom. The Blue Wonder, the Peene Bridge, is Germany's largest bascule bridge. Every 4 hours it opens its almost 50 metre long flap for about 15 minutes, which is always watched by many onlookers. In the town centre with its alleyways, corners and historic buildings, such as the town hall, the Rungehaus and the town museum, there is a weekly market and small shops to explore, while restaurants and cafés on the castle island with a view of the water invite you to linger. Wolgast is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. The Gertruden Chapel and St Petrie's Church with panoramic views over Wolgast and the surrounding area are worth a visit, while the Dreilindengrung bathing area offers a beautiful view of the Peene Bridge. Wolgast is a good location for excursions and cycle tours on and around the island of Usedom. Bicycle and boat hire are available in the town. With the UBB (Usedomer Bäder Bahn) you can travel across the island to Poland every half hour. The town harbour is the starting point for various boat trips to the Achterwasser or across the Peene to the Baltic Sea. Wolgast Zoo is home to over 300 animals of 40 different species. The facility also has a petting enclosure and a zoo school especially for younger guests. Many shopping facilities can be found in the village and the Baltic Sea beach is about 10 kilometres away. Usedom, the sunny island, offers approx. 40 kilometres of beaches along the Baltic coast from Peenemünde to Ahlbeck. The charming villas and hotels along the beach promenades and the imperial resorts of Heringsdorf, Bansin and Ahlbeck are always worth a visit. There are cycle paths to explore along the coast as far as Poland, through a varied landscape with mixed forests, cliffs, many inland lakes and along the Achterwasser.
